Loreto, Baja California

The historic town of Loreto is Located approximately 215 miles north of the city of La Paz on the shores of the Sea of Cortez. Surrounded by dramatic scenery; the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range, the dramatic Baja desert and the blue waters of the Sea of Cortez.

Founded in 1697 Loreto is the oldest town in Baja California and the home of the first Jesuit mission of the Californias. The mission of Nuestra Señora de Loreto was built in 1752 and is located in the center of town. Wonderfully maintained it includes a Catholic church and a museum filled with religious art and colonial artifacts.

Facing Loreto are several magnificent Islands; Coronado Island with it’s beautiful white sand beach, great for snorkeling and kayaking, Carmen Island with it’s wonderful beaches and coves and several others that attract colonies of sea lions, blue whales and schools of dolphins.

The Sea of Cortez and the surrounding islands have made Loreto a world-class sportfishing destination. An abundance of dorado during summer and fall, yellowtail in winter and spring plus sailfish, wahoo and roosterfish give Loreto outstanding fishing year round.

Loreto also offers great tourist amenities. In nearby Nopolo, a popular tourist development just south of town there are two wonderful resort hotels surrounded by the Sea of Cortez the La Giganta Mountains and an 18-hole golf course.

Loreto has an international airport with scheduled flights from Los Angeles and San Diego.
